Our work in Maryland has three goals:

  • Improving water quality
  • Conserving land
  • Strengthening citizen advocacy

We support organizations serving the state of Maryland, with local work primarily funded in the Baltimore metro area. We also make a small number of grants in Pennsylvania (primarily Lancaster County and the Poconos) and in central New Jersey.

Goal One: Improve water quality by reducing pollution.

To meet this goal, we support:

  • Efforts to improve enforcement of clean water laws and increase voluntary reduction of pollution

  • Protection, conservation, and restoration of the region’s streams and rivers

Goal Two: Conserve land by reducing and preventing pollution, by protecting and restoring environmentally sensitive land, and by encouraging redevelopment of urban areas.

To meet this goal, we support:

  • Efforts to protect, conserve, and restore lands that affect water quality

  • Efforts to increase access to sustainable food production

  • Efforts to prevent or reduce the impact of environmentally damaging projects

  • Initiatives to improve the quality of life in urban, rural, and suburban areas through environmental restoration/engagement

Goal Three: Strengthen communities by engaging people in environmental issues.

To meet this goal, we support:

  • Education and engagement of citizens in Chesapeake Bay advocacy and related environmental issues

  • Initiatives to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations working on the environment

  • Efforts to increase green job opportunities and skills in communities
